Quantum computing company IonQ is buying Bloomington-based SkyWater Technology for $1.8 billion in cash and stock. SkyWater is one of the only pure-play U.S. semiconductor foundries — the company that makes chips the Pentagon trusts. The deal creates a vertically integrated quantum computing and chip manufacturing platform. SkyWater will keep operating under its existing leadership as a wholly owned subsidiary, still serving its foundry customers. Expected to close Q2 or Q3 2026. A $1.8B acquisition of a Bloomington fab is the kind of deal that puts a city on the map whether it wants to be or not.
