Jefferson junior Hannah Anjere placed second at the Metro West Conference cross country championships on Oct. 20. That's about as close to the top as you can get in a league stacked with strong distance programs, and she did it a short drive from home at Hyland Greens Golf Course in Bloomington.
According to the Jefferson team's meet page, the conference meet drew 8 schools: Benilde-St. Margaret's, Bloomington Jefferson, Chanhassen, Chaska, New Prague, Orono, St. Louis Park and Waconia. The girls varsity race went off at 3:30 p.m., the boys varsity followed at 4:05 p.m., and awards were set for 5:40 p.m.
Anjere is already in the Jaguars' record book. Jefferson's all-time list of girls who have broken 20 minutes in the 5K has her at No. 5 with a 19:09.1. Only Megan Lee (17:42.5) and Amelia Borgen (18:28.1) are among the names ahead of her.
The championship part of the season moves fast from here. Jefferson's schedule lists the Section 2AAA championship for Oct. 27 at Gale Woods in Minnetrista, with varsity runners only. The MSHSL state meet follows on Nov. 7 for runners who qualify. A runner who just placed second in the Metro West is the kind of name to watch when section results come in.
