The rebuilt Hopkins and Mission Road corner is getting a new street light. When the Bloomington City Council meets October 26, its consent agenda includes approval of a new street light installation at Hopkins and Mission Road. Consent items are routine and pass together in 1 motion unless a council member pulls one out for discussion. The agenda gives no cost or details. The light follows the council's 5-0 vote to rename the leftover stub of Hopkins Road northwest of 10526 Hopkins Road and 600 Mission Road. That stretch will become Mission Road after the election.
The corner had been a problem for years. In October 2024, city staff told the Planning Commission that the Hopkins and Mission intersection was a large, wide stretch of pavement and "not the safest intersection," with a yield sign for northbound drivers. In October 2025, staff came back with a plan to realign this "very tight angled intersection" so it would be clearer who has the right of way and drivers could see better.

Before the project, the corner was a Y. Now Hopkins meets Mission Road at a T. That left 2 homes addressed on a Hopkins Road stub whose name no longer matched the road it connects to, which is why the city sought the rename. The Planning Commission held a public hearing on September 17.

The council held its own hearing on September 28 and voted 5-0 for the rename.

Next up: the council meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday, October 26, in Council Chambers at Civic Plaza, 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road, and the street light is on that night's consent agenda. The new street name takes effect after the election. We'll update this story when the new name takes effect.
