Bloomington Parks and Recreation is running an intergenerational fishing day at West Bush Lake Park on Monday, August 17, from 1 to 3 p.m., pairing grandparents 50 and older with their grandchildren for an afternoon off the dock. The name is a pun: this is about fishing reels, not film reels.
The event runs in partnership with instructors from Fishing for All, who bring the gear so nobody needs to own a rod to show up. The city says fishing license waivers will be provided for all participants, and everything is catch-and-release — organizers are encouraging families to snap photos together rather than keep the fish.
It's happening at West Bush Lake Park, 9401 W. Bush Lake Road, and costs $10 per adult and $5 per child. Registration goes through the city's adult programs page, where the event is also listed under the name 'Reel Memories: A Grandparent and Grandchild Fishing Day.'
The fishing day is part of the city's broader lineup of 50-plus programming, most of which shifted to Logan Lodge and the Bloomington Center for the Arts after Creekside Community Center closed in May 2025.
