Senate District 50 is open this year. Incumbent Sen. Alice Mann, DFL-Edina, isn't running again, and four Democrats are now competing for their party's nod before facing Republican Owen Michaelson in the general election. The district covers parts of Edina and Bloomington, and the primary is set for August 11, 2026, per the Sun Current.
Karla Hult is a journalist with degrees from St. Olaf College and Columbia University, and a mother of two in Edina Schools. She's campaigning on affordability — healthcare, housing and education — along with protecting reproductive freedom, gun safety and what she calls defending democracy, according to the Sun Current.
Amal Ibrahim, a community organizer and healthcare entrepreneur who immigrated to Minnesota in 2012, is based in both Edina and Bloomington. Her priorities include healthcare as a human right, economic development, public safety and education, and affordable housing.

Nelly Korman brings the most local government experience of the four: she's served 14 years on the Bloomington School Board, previously sat on the city's Planning Commission, and teaches Spanish immersion at a public high school while pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership. She's running on affordability, civil rights and public infrastructure, with an emphasis on accessible healthcare, education and community trust.
John McClellan, a retired Minneapolis firefighter who holds a law degree and a master's in forensic psychology, founded the Minnesota Justice Coalition. He's focused on education investment, mental health services, affordable housing and healthcare, cutting property taxes, and supporting term limits.
Voters in the district — and Bloomington residents who fall within its boundaries — will help decide which of the four advances to the general election when they cast ballots on August 11.
