The Mall of America added "America 250 | MN 250" to its events calendar, marking 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence with a free day of exhibits, reenactors and history at the Bloomington mall.
The event ran July 3, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., with free admission, and featured interactive exhibits tracing 250 years of the people who shaped Minnesota, from Indigenous history through the state's immigrant communities. Reenactors staffed the floor to talk through the American Revolution, the fur trade and women's suffrage.
The Dakota County Historical Society hosted its own piece of the celebration that Sunday, July 5, at the mall, bringing exhibits and hands-on activities. As part of it, Indigenous dressmaker Michele Hakala-Beeksma modeled three handmade dresses representing different eras of Ojibwe life at an Indigenous fashion show.
It's the kind of tie-in the mall leans on during a big civic anniversary: bring the history to where the foot traffic already is. With the country's 250th running through 2026, expect more of these one-off history days to pop up on the mall's calendar alongside the usual concerts and character meet-and-greets.
